Our new Magnetic Pearl Hybrid

Hi everyone!

I posted this in the big sedan thread first, then I saw this thread. oops

I bought this for my daughter yesterday. It's a Magnetic Pearl '07 Hybrid with Navi. Put a hundred miles on it today just for fun (my daughter is away until tomorrow :) )

First impressions:

I love the car. Navigation works better than my old car (2004 AMG E55, sold this year). Voice implementation is sweet, although we had some fun and games on the freeway trying to guess how to make the system do stuff (I didn't read the manual lol). "ready weapons" doesn't work... Tried out everything on the stereo and it all worked. Used an old pc card adapter and stuck a 2 gig CF card in it, burned a MP3 CD, used an accessory cable to go from the acc. plug to the ipod and it all worked as expected. I read a few bad reviews on the ipod kit so I'll pass on it. Decided to not add the auto mirror, as I stuck a wide angle on the stock mirror. That left the fog lights I wanted installed. Dealer wanted $800...$620 is the cheapest I found on the net, plus the sedan kit isn't as clean looking as the si kit, so I changed my mind...no aftermarket OEM accessories.

The only thing left is the wheels. The stock hybrid rims (and I apologize if anyone likes them) are butt ugly to me. It's like they took a hunk of aluminum and said "hey let's make a set of rims that look like hubcaps"

I'm considering rims and summer tires for the car (yes, it's my daughter's car lol), but i'm still doing homework on it as I'm a bit concerned about possible weight issues.

Well, that's my introduction & here's the pictures of the car.

Hey! Sweet looking car. And yes, you should get new wheels and tires. You may see a 2-3 mpg drop by changing the rims since they were designed to be wind resistant, but you might get lucky if you find a set with less weight and adequate rubber for fuel economy. Remember, it's not only the car, it's how you drive it that gets you the golden mileage. And you're daughter must be very lucky :)

thanks. although I like the look of a larger rim better (18's was what i was thinking before I started researching) i'm seeing some posts by guys that have lost up to 8mpg after they switched. they're guessing it was their choice in tires that did it (they didn't get low rolling resistance rubber).

i'll have to see what turns up. I guess the safest way is to replace the rims and ride on the same rubber to see what happens.

the car's not broken in yet and i'm driving with bad habits (fast lane, 80mph with the flow of traffic) and the car's not broken in yet so I only got 30 mpg today.

took it from 14 miles on the Odometer to about 125 or so...

tomorrow i've got to drive a couple hundred for business, i'll slow it down and see what milage I can get.

(minor edit: the 30mpg is the number I got off the trip meter, which includes all miles including dealership miles. I test drove it at about 7miles on the odometer or so)

30 mpg is better than what I was getting on the E55 (14ish?) or with my Dodge Durango (11) though.

That looks pretty sweet... couple questions.

How much of a hit did you take in MPG with the 18's ?
Also what size spacers did you use 3mm or 5mm ?

I have a set of SI wheels which I'm getting ready to mount with tires. Just trying to decide which tire would be optimal. I currently get ~48 MPG per tank average, but guessing it will drop ~44 with 17's. I also have the full SI suspension on as well which IMO has helped MPG and of course bumped up to fun factor in driving.

Did you get your Si wheels mounted on your car? Any hit in MPG? What tires did you use? On the HFPs you don't need spacers, but I know you need them for the Si wheels. But, not sure if that is the same on the hybrid. I am sure you are loving the Si suspension on your hybrid. It makes a world of difference.

New member (although I have lurked for a while) and wanted to share pics of the new (to me) wheels: BBS RK's in 18x7.5, et 42. I will have more info on the gas mileage impact later this week...hopefully it's not too bad

For those who changed out their hybrid wheels, how much of an affect on gas mileage did you see?

I keep going back and forth about wanting to switch....

Thanks!

On my 2006 hybrid I had 17X8 OZ Superleggera wheels with 225/45/17 Kumho ASX all season tires on there. The OZ wheels are really light, but I think one of the problems were that my tires were not low rolling resistance tires. On a good day I could get 42 and that is all highway at steady 55ish speeds. Needless to say I put the stock wheels and tires back on and grew to like them.

Now I have a 2007 hybrid and have 17" HFP wheels on there with Si stock 215/45/17 all season tires on there and I am lucky to even get 40. But, the car is too new (50 miles) since the engine hasn't broken in. But, I am sure it will be the same or lower since the HFP wheels are heavier. I am trying to sell my HFP and I am going to put my stock wheels back on there.
