Question Oil change DIY?

I haven't been able to find an oil change DIY, can anyone post one or point to one that's been posted? My wife's 06 Civic Hybrid is due for its first oil change and I'll get getting my 07 Si in a couple weeks so I'd like to know how to change the oil for when it's time.

I'm going to get a fluid evacuator/extractor like this one so I don't have to drain it all into a pan and risk making a mess, but I'll need to get under the car to change the filter, right? I'd like to be able to do this myself and not risk someone messing up my new baby.

1. Unscrew your oil cap
2. Remove drain bolt from oil pan and let oil drain into something.
3. Clean off drain bolt.
4. Remove oil filter (good luck if it's the factory filter)
5. Put a coat of oil on the seal of the new filter and put the new filter on.
6. Put the drain bolt back in.
7. Put in new oil (Amsoil FTW)

Help me out if I forgot something.

Can anyone post pictures? I'm not sure I'd know what I was looking for the first time I get under the car. How do I know what the oil cap looks like?

Thats on a R18 sedan, I believe for an Si the filter is on the back of the engine towards the firewall, (someone with an si correct me). As for the hybrid I dont have the slightest clue.

you're gonna want to know an approximate amount of oil to put in.. you can't fill it up till it over flows and expect everything to be ok.. i'm not sure how many quarts of oil that would be.. i believe it should say in your owners manual. after you put new oil in you'll want to let the car run for a few minutes and warm up then check the level on your dip stick. if it's too low you'll know to add more.

Hey, sorry. I meant the oil cap ontop of your engine. Taking it off while you drain it lets it drain out smoothly. There are a few ways you can get to the filter on the Si. The easiest in my opinion is if you take off the front right wheel and go through the wheel well. Pretty sure it's 4.6 quarts. And definately read everything in the owners manual about the oil.

It's really pretty simple, the drain bolt is at the very bottom of the engine. It's horizontal and facing the rear. I find it was most easily accessable by going under the car from the front, althought it might be easier to see from the sides, but harder to get to. Just take off your front right wheel and look into the wheel well and you'll find the filter. The factory Honda one is blue and is again horizontal and faces the rear. I'd post pictures if I had them, but you can also find it if you get under your car and look at the pictures in the owners manual.

Thanks for the help. The filter should be easy enough to find since the factory one is blue. My concern is the drain bolt, the last thing I want to do is start removing the wrong bolts from the engine. Is it labeled somehow?

For your 1st oil change, go to the dealer and watch the Tech do it.
The 1st change should be free. Give the Tech a $10 spot and ask some questions.

After that, you can follow the instructions here on removing the passenger wheel for the filter change when you change the oil in the future.

Yeah if you really don't know what you're doing, you can't go wrong by taking it to the dealer. The factory filer is insanely difficult to take off. Like a gorilla put it on at the factory.

if you don't know what an oil cap looks like you should really let someone
show you how to do it first... i don't mean to sound like some asshole, but
im just saying, you might end up draining the tranny oil or something crazy.

your owners manual has illustrations on all the caps and where the
oil drain pan bolt, filter, etc. are.

Well, if I get the pump, I won't need to loosen the bolt since I won't be draining the oil out that way. I'd just suck out all the oil, lubricate and change the filter, than pour the new oil in.

true... but how do you now you got all of it out? especially for
when you want to change from dino to synthetic?

i would be ... if you're changing to the same oil im sure it's
fine.

i usually let my oil pan drip for 35-40min...sometimes up to 1hr.
